There is really only one difference between the Instax Mini 8 and the Instax Mini 9, and it’s a tiny mirror. The newer Mini 9 is a bit more expensive than the Mini 8, but consider this: if you’ll likely be taking a lot of selfies, the mirror could save you a small fortune on movie costs as you’ll have fewer wobbly, poorly framed clasps. Simple to use, with brightness controls, built-in flash, and cool 1.8 x 2.4 inch images printed directly from the camera, it’s truly a bargain. But could you be tempted by the newer Instax Mini 9?

If you’re looking for something retro, it’s hard to beat the Fujifilm Instax Mini 90 and its traditional leather-style binding. As you can see in the price chart below, it is also the most expensive of Fujifilm’s Instax Mini cameras.

There is certainly an argument that the Instax Mini 8 and 9 are aimed at a younger or more casual market thanks to their bright pastel colors and chunky build. But there are some more elegant options for little else – namely the Fujifilm Instax Mini 70.
The Instax Mini 70 offers more technical control options and shooting modes than the Mini 8/9 and takes better photos in the dark. It is also equipped with a selfie mirror as standard. With its smoother metallic paint job, it loses the toy vibe of the above models, creating something far more professional while maintaining a compact, instant camera vibe. If you feel dumb holding the Instax Mini 8 but want a similar design, this is your best choice.
Fujifilm Instax Mini 70 costs two CR2 batteries (opens in a new tab) and is available in lunar white, canary yellow, island blue, passion red, stardust gold and midnight black.
If the SQ10 is a bit more than you thought of paying, but are still a fan of the Square Fujifilm Instax series, let’s take a look at the SQ6. Both are printed in square format, but have some noticeable differences elsewhere. The SQ6 is an analog camera, just like the cheaper Instax models, so the photos are printed straight away as you shoot. This model lacks additional shooting modes and the SQ10 flash option.
We prefer the physical design of the SQ6 as the SQ10 sometimes reminds us of a diving camera while the former has a classic retro look. When all is said and done, it depends if you want a stylish camera or a digital camera / printer that will allow you to evaluate the image before printing it. If you know you’re prone to taking a few poor photos, you can save a lot of money by using a digital camera instead of paying for extra sheets of film.
The Fujifilm Instax Square SQ10 camera ranks somewhere in between its Mini and Wide ranges, taking advantage of its new square film and boasting digital camera features that the Japanese manufacturer hopes will appeal to a younger, more tech-savvy audience.
The most notable feature of the Fujifilm Instax Square SQ10 is the ability to view and edit photos using the small LCD display on the back of the camera. Unfortunately, the digital camera component lowers the SQ10 a bit as the image quality cannot compete with other digital cameras – or smartphones. Nice set, and if you want more control over your images and the ability to customize and edit in-camera, this is a good fit.
