AdminThe latest Meta Quest Pro update has brought some significant improvements that I wish Oculus Quest 2 would get as well.
The first and my favorite is the introduction of background sound. Now, when you’re sitting at your virtual desk in Horizon Workrooms or playing Walkabout Mini Golf, you can listen to background audio from the Browser app. Sign into a music streaming service of your choice or stick to a podcast, and if the background audio feature is turned on, you should be able to hear the sound while using another app.
To enable this feature, go to the Experimental section in the Meta Quest Pro settings. There you should be able to enable background audio playback and give it a try.
The second update is a major change to the Quest Pro mixed reality capture tool.
I remember during the Meta Quest Pro pre-launch event, current YouTubers weren’t thrilled to hear that mixed reality footage doesn’t represent the real world. Instead, game elements in the film would be shown against a completely blank black background. This would not create interesting content and certainly would not properly demonstrate the capabilities of the MR Pro.
Fortunately, version 47 changes that. Now when you record while playing a mixed reality app like Tribe XR or Painting VR (one of the VR apps I recommended in October (opens in a new tab)) you’ll be able to capture both game and real world elements in one video. Take this as a warning to remove anything embarrassing from your VR space before you start recording as it will now be visible to everyone.
Fulfill your wish list
Meta hasn’t forgotten those of us still using the Oculus Quest 2, as version 47 also brings some (albeit minor) improvements to the headset.
If you’re hoping to digitally unbox some new VR games this year – perhaps some of our list of the best Oculus Quest 2 games – you might appreciate the new shareable wishlist feature. In the Meta Quest Store, you can go to the Wishlist tab, make your Wishlist public, and then create a link for others to check out.
The update will also make it easier to change the look of your meta avatar. Thanks to the new mirror coming to your Horizon Home environment, Quest 2 and Quest Pro users will be able to see what your avatar looks like in real time. You’ll be able to mix and match your digital match before jumping into the metaverse hangout.
