The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 appears to have quite a significant design change if freshly revealed unofficial renders are to be believed – and this design change includes a much larger screen on the outside of the phone when folded.
These renders are provided by the usual render maker on Leaks (opens in a new tab)and shown at MediaPeanut (opens in a new tab). They are based on unconfirmed information from inside sources, so take them with a grain of salt for now.
This extended cover display is the star of the show here, with a small tab cut out for the dual-lens rear camera. We’ve already seen this larger cover in an earlier leak, but here we have a much better idea of what it’s going to look like.

Specification rumors
These renders also show the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s main display, which is said to measure 6.7 inches from corner to corner. Inside the phone, we’re most likely looking at a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor paired with 8GB of RAM.
As for the rear camera system, rumor has it that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will come with the same 12MP + 12MP dual-lens module as its predecessor. However, there is one hardware upgrade we’ve heard about: IP68 water and dust resistance.
Given the credibility of the source and how these renders match up with previous leaks, we can assume this is the actual design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. We should know for sure in late July.
Analysis: cover display trends in 2023
You don’t need to be a seasoned mobile industry analyst to spot the trend this year for foldable flip phones that use a clamshell design: their external displays are getting bigger.
While something like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a more conventional phone-like display on the outside, these flip phones are much smaller when closed, giving manufacturers and engineers less room to work.
However, now they have started to make the most of this room: The Oppo Find N2 Flip has a 3.26-inch display on the case, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is rumored to follow suit, and similar rumors have been swirling around the Motorola Razr 2023.
We’re assuming the cost of developing and fitting these larger (but still small) screens has dropped to the point where they can be added on without increasing the price of the phone itself – and that extra size potentially makes them much more useful.
