Notorious is a first-person fantasy RPG from Obsidian Entertainment Fallout: New Vegas, The Outer Worlds and creators Pillars of Eternity series.
Set in the world of Eora from Pillars of Eternity Games, Notorious promises a fantasy epic, moving away from the isometric style of newer Obsidian titles in favor of a Skyrim-esque first-person approach. Given the success The outer worldsit seems likely that Obsidian will be able to deliver when it comes to Notorious. Plus, with all the wealth of knowledge already established in Pillars of Eternity games, Obsidian will have a lot of work to do when it comes to crafting the storyline for its new game.
As with other Obsidian titles, Notorious It’s supposed to be an Xbox exclusive. It has been officially confirmed that the game will be released on Xbox Series X|S and PC, as well as Xbox Game Pass.
Avowed: get to the point
- What is this? A new first-person fantasy RPG from Obsidian Entertainment
- When can I play it? to be confirmed
- What can I play it on? Xbox Series X|S and PC
Release date and platform provided
There aren’t Notorious release date for now, and since details are scarce, we don’t expect to see an Obsidian RPG until at least mid-2023.
However, we know that Notorious will be an Xbox exclusive. Given Microsoft’s previous release pattern, this means it’s coming to PC, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. As is the case with first-party games, it’s also coming to Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on day one.
Since Microsoft owns Obsidian, we shouldn’t expect the game to come to PS5. Although The outer worlds landed on both the PlayStation and Xbox platforms, was in development long before Microsoft’s acquisition of Obsidian was finalized, and it’s highly unlikely that Notorious will go the same way.
Declared gameplay and setting
Notorious is a fantasy RPG. The action takes place in Eora, a world Pillars of Eternity games, both games are made by Obsidian, but Avowed will adopt a first-person perspective rather than POE’s isometric perspective. So the game will look completely different than its predecessors.
We expect that fans of POE games will surely recognize the elements of the world. Pillars of Eternity however, it was largely focused on the Dyrwood nation, so we got to see it Notorious discover another nation, continent or part of the world that we have not seen before.
What’s also new is that the POE games were largely first PC experiences, even if both 2015 games Pillars of Eternity and a sequel from 2018 Dead fire it arrived on current-gen consoles a few years after their initial release date. Avowed announced on the Xbox stream, for release on PC, Xbox and Game Pass, confirms just how different it’s going to be. Expect a very controller-friendly RPG.
Based on his trailer, Notorious made some comparisons to the Elder Scrolls series in terms of appearance, but Phil Spencer said there were “marked differences” between the games.
asked on IGN podcast (opens in a new tab) if Avowed plays a role in Elder Scrolls for Xbox, considering Elder Scrolls 6 there’s still plenty of time, Spencer replied:
“I think the games are very different, so maybe I have a bit of a hard time saying it’s our version of it just knowing what [Obsidian studio head Feargus Urquhart] and the team sets out to do. But when I think about our roster, and I think about this more basic fantasy RPG setting, I think Notorious there’s going to be an amazing entrance there.”
Either way, we can’t wait to see what Obsidian brings to the game, even if it’s close Skyrim in a combination of spell-assisted combat and epic open-world quests.

Latest trailer
First Notorious the trailer clearly depicts the scene, with medieval battlements, flaming arrows, and lots of war-torn landscape plagued by skeletal warriors. Near the end, we get a brief glimpse into the player’s point of view, showing a similar first-person perspective and the ability to wield a sword in one hand and cast rune-based spells in the other. So far Skyrim.

More Notorious information will appear “soon”
In Post Xbox Wire (opens in a new tab) back in 2021, Obsidian took the opportunity to explain that “the team is hard at work creating something we are confident fans of our games and Pillars of Eternity they will love the universe.” So while Obsidian isn’t ready to show off Notorious yet, he said “we can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on soon.”
However, considering it’s been 2 years and we haven’t received any new information in the meantime, it seems Xbox has a pretty liberal definition of “coming soon”. Let’s hope we see more Notorious information as 2023 progresses
